Book Review: The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri

If you’re looking for a book that’s as heart-wrenching as it is beautiful, “The Beekeeper of Aleppo” by Christy Lefteri should be at the top of your list. Christy Lefteri’s wonderful writing takes you on a truly emotional rollercoaster, offering a deeply human glimpse into the lives of those affected by the Syrian civil war.

Meet Nuri and Afra, a couple living in Aleppo with their son, before their beautiful life is turned upside down by the war. Nuri is a beekeeper, and Afra is an artist, living a peacefully, and happily, until the conflict forces them to flee their home. Their journey to Britain is anything but easy. Afra loses her sight, not just physically but emotionally, as she struggles to cope with the heartbreaking trauma of losing their son.

As they navigate treacherous waters and terribly hostile borders, Nuri and Afra’s story is interwoven with those of other refugees, each one drawing our attention to their own heartache. But, amid the darkness, there are moments of hope and humanity that shine through, making this a truly compelling story of Heartbreak, Love, Strength, and Faith.

My Analysis

Lefteri’s storytelling is infused with empathy and authenticity, largely taken from her own experiences working with refugees, and she certainly doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of war and displacement. I am sure you are already aware of what has been happening with Syria, but if not then you can find out more here.

What struck me the most was how Lefteri portrays trauma. Nuri and Afra’s pain is palpable, you can literally feel their hearts breaking. And their journey is as much about healing some of that heartbreak as it is about survival. The detailed descriptions of beekeeping are not just fascinating but symbolic, representing a thread of hope and continuity in Nuri’s life. It’s these small, beautiful moments that provide a counterbalance to the overwhelming grief and loss.

Character Development

Nuri and Afra are truly unforgettable, and wonderful characters. Nuri’s sheer determination to protect his wife and keep moving forward, despite his own deep suffering, is so incredibly moving. And then there is Afra’s journey, taking her from such a vibrant artist to a woman battling blindness and trauma. Nuri’s determination and Afra’s slow reconnection with her art speaks absolute volumes about healing and resilience.

The supporting characters, including fellow refugees and aid workers, add so much depth to the story. Each one contributing to a broader picture of the refugee experience. and drawing you right in to their own heartbreak and trauma.

Conclusion: The Beekeeper Of Aleppo

The Beekeeper of Aleppo

“The Beekeeper of Aleppo” is a novel that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page which is why it gets 5 stars from me! It’s such a touching reminder of the human cost of the Syrian conflict and the incredible strength of those who have no choice but to endure it.

Not only has Lefteri given a voice to the voiceless, making their stories absolutely impossible to ignore, but her writing is nothing short of poetic. Her vivid descriptions transport you to the bustling streets of Aleppo, the perilous seas, and the uncertainty of refugee camps whilst the shifting narative between the past and the present keeps you hooked and makes you feel every single bit of Nuri and Afra’s journey.

Once I picked this one up, I struggled to put it down! And, whilst I wish I had not read it when I was already in a bit of an amotional state, I am so glad I didn’t pass on this one. It is truly heartbreaking and heart warming at the same time!

So… If you want a read that’s both eye-opening and deeply moving, this is it! “The Beekeeper of Aleppo” is an experience that will touch your heart and broaden your understanding of the refugee crisis. Grab a tissue box and prepare to be moved by Nuri and Afra’s unforgettable journey.
